The Ever Raging Retro Debate Hits Winston-Salem, NC . . . Again?

This article from the Winston-Salem Journal illustrates nicely how we let money get in the way of doing what is right. According to the article a fire eleven years ago that killed eight people prompted a requirement for sprinklers in institutional facilities and rest homes but left out a requirement for sprinklers in anything built before 1996. Now a fire in March that killed one and injured 21 still hasn’t garnered much support for spinklers in existing facilities. From the Article;

That [lack of support for sprinklers due to financial reasons] constitutes a shameful failure to protect one of our most vulnerable populations, the elderly and the disabled. Not having these systems also endangers workers at these facilities, as well as firefighters and emergency workers.”
